firsts are best because they are beginnings. “

*artist’s comments: this painting is from my imagination of an old white schoolhouse in a quiet county setting. these old schoolhouses once dotted the countryside, close enough for children to walk to in most weather.

  1. I suspect it may make others look at me oddly, but I actually loved being in school! With a strict home upbringing where my ‘friends’ were chosen for me, being at school allowed me to have a ‘social life’ of my own choosing. And I liked learning (except for a few subjects). Don’t get me wrong – by the end of the school year, I was ready for a break.

I love the idea that the first day of school is about beginnings, and I suppose that is what it was for me.

  2. but don’t begining’s require the ending of something? how can one have one w/o the other?
You and the kids are in for a wonderful year of growing ahead of you.

  3. I went to that schoolhouse. Well, one similar and equally endearing.
It closed as I finished grade 3. Not because they were building a bigger, better school but because the Dutch folks built their own school and it left about 10 of us kids in grades 1 to 8.
It was a great place to go to school. Snakes slithered down the bell rope, the well water smelled skunky because there was a dead skunk down there! Deer peeked in the windows and before my time, the grade 8 students convinced their teacher to climb up on the school roof. Then took away the ladder.
It was good to be a kid in school! :D

  4. I’ve seen that painting a few times before. On your blog? It’s such a sweet innocent picture of more quiet times, less rushed, I love it. I also can relate to the ‘firsts’ – but I bet that all kids would question your thinking… :)
