i need to go now.

Standard

she remembered off and on

throughout the afternoon

why she needed to leave school and go home

she tried calling on the old wood phone

told us she did not need to be here

told us her mom misses her

gave us so many, many reasons

and finally

she came up with my favorite:

“i need to go home…….to fix my hair!”

well, why didn’t you say so in the first place?

of course you do

we reminded her that mom would be back pretty soon

and in the meantime

we marched around like big dinosaurs

laughing and playing

ate applesauce and ran around outside

on a cool almost fall day

hair flying in the wind.

“home is where somebody notices when you are no longer there.”

  1. Yes very true. When we are not at home, we miss our home. It is the only place in our society where our mind is truly happy and excited and entertained. Every moment our mind is home, we live in the house like parents, brothers and sisters. Sometimes our childhood and fun are gone for years. The times and moments we spend always haunt us when we step out of the house as if we were away from home.

  2. This is SUCH a delightful joyful story…. Of course you do!
As for the quote, I hope it‘s not true because HH never notices if I don‘t return when one would think I should. He comes home whenever…. And he NEVER worries if I‘m not back ‚in time‘ after an errant or a rehearsal or whatever…. :)

  3. I love this post, Beth, especially marching around like big dinosaurs and needing to fix her hair. Children are magical, and you were sweet to distract and comfort her in creative ways.
