am i the only one who never ate butter rum lifesavers as a child
because i thought they had rum in them?
maybe pirates ate them?
for some reason i never questioned the idea that they’d sell liquor candy to children.
—
it turns out they didn’t, as described by the candy company below:
what flavor are butter rum lifesavers?
“the aroma alone will ignite your tastebuds as you happily experience the irresistible and warm flavors. each candy is filled with an incredibly creamy texture and a buttery and sweet taste with a hint of saltiness. warm and smooth tasting and echoing a gentle note of rum, creating a decadent and distinctive flavor.”
what?!
paradigm shift.

I didn’t know about these sweets, but I do like the sound of that flavour!
Best wishes, Pete.

I wasn’t aware of this flavor when I was a child. We were all excited about getting the five fruit flavor roll of Lifesavers. Having tasted the butter rum as an adult, it seems to be in the same family as the taste of butterscotch and caramel, being able to only tell it is not that flavor by the saltiness in the butter rum flavor.

yes, I think that describes it well. I loved the five fruit roll the best, too

I’ve eaten buttered rum something or other. Remember moving it around with my tongue.
Have drunk a lot of rum mixed with something or other. Don’t remember a thing about it.

My nana always had these in her purse. Is there a difference between butter rum and butterscotch? Because I remember them pretty much the same. She had the butterscotch candies in a bowl in her house. I can smell the sweet flavor as I type. I miss her! Maybe I’ll grab a roll of lifesavers next time I’m at the store and reminisce! 💛

I only knew them – I think – when I lived in Toronto for a while, as a young woman. I liked them for their hole where one could stick the tongue into and stick the candy on it like a fish on a rod! Later on I got to know the Polo mints, maybe in the UK?, don’t remember. I think I’d never go for Butter Rum, it just sounds so bizarre…. but I’m no fan of butterscotch either, so they probably taste more or less the same?!

Italian weddings – we kids got plenty of rum then: on the cakes, pastries, candy and at the table in the cellars where the old men swapped tales of life back in the old country. It was OK because the rum was merely a seasoning in desserts not a beginner ticket to booze.

Sounds quintessential Italian…. as kids I was insanely jealous when the Italian bambini got to suck at ‘anything’ dunked in red wine which made them go to sleep while we were strictly forbidden to even nip at father’s wine
Just look at where it got us! 😉

I never really thought about it but your question made me laugh. Butter Rum lifesavers were always my favorite as a child, and I didn’t think they had rum in them. But I have always loved rum flavor, enough that my wedding cake was a rum cake. I never before thought that perhaps my early attraction to these lifesavers did introduce that flavor! 😉
