when playing outside
the kinder found a dead bird
they called out to everyone to come over to see it
they said goodbye to the bird and told her that they were sad that she had died
we put a circle of pretty leaves around her to keep her safe on her journey.

That’s lovely. It’s good for such young children to understand about death.
Best wishes, Pete.

What brave hearts and mature minds your kinders have to grasp the concept of death at such a young age and then be able to do some act of kindness for it. This leaves a lasting impression on my heart, and I wasn’t even there to see it!

You took this and made it into a beautiful teaching moment. Beth, thank you for teaching these little people to love animals, people and life. And to show respect.

I remember this same event vividly, except with a bunny. The children were as caring and transfixed as yours. It was a remarkable experience of learning and caring. Rumi’s quote is spot on.

One of our pet rats passed away, and we held my first and only rat memorial—things you never imagined doing when you became a teacher.

They are indeed. Respect is important. They are so lucky to have you for a teacher. Actually, all of us are.
