*Don Komarechka is a nature & landscape photographer located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Don is no stranger to cold winters. From auroras to pollen, insects to infrared, much of Don’s photographic adventures reveal a deeper understanding of how the universe works. Snowflakes are no exception.

Don began studying the science of snowflakes the same day he first photographed them, nearly four years prior to the publication of this book. Since then, snowflakes have been a non-stop passion.

Each one of Don’s snowflake images is photographed on an old black mitten at his home. Barrie, Ontario is known for higher levels of winter precipitation, making it a great location to capture hundreds of beautiful specimens.

Always science-minded but never formally trained, Don uses photography as a way to explore and understand the world around him. Photographing something unusual or unknown is the perfect excuse to learn something new.

“nature is full of genius, full of the divinity; so that not a snowflake escapes its fashioning hand.”

  1. Thank you for this informative post and to Don Komareckta. I am fascinated with snow flakes for many reasons…no least of which was when I was at school in the fifties I had to write an message on ‘snowflakes’ and then present it to a panel…………I will look for this book. Janet

  2. Look at that! My eyes don’t work as well as I’d like and I can’t see snowflakes in all their intricacy when they fall on my sweater or mitten. But this photograph captures them and keeps them still enough for me to gaze and notice… what a treat! Thank you for sharing.

  3. That is an interesting concept for a book. Snowflakes are cool and fun, Beth, except for yesterday and today when we had 10″ of them. Always love light and easy snowfalls where the snowflakes are huge and they stick to the trees.

  4. What an interesting story, Beth! Currently I am reading “The Hidden Messages in Water” by Dr. Masaru Emoto and his research about water, ice crystals, etc. reminds me of Don Komarechka’s photography. And on a black mitt! Thank you so much for sharing this, Beth! Cher xoxoxo
