This might well be one of the most crucial elections in history. Not just for America, but for the world at large.
Best wishes, Pete.

don’t really understand the American system, Beth; it all seems to be happening rather early —

It’s a train wreck, lol. The simplified version is that primaries are where we choose the candidates that will run in the main election later in the year. In some states, primaries also include votes to pass various laws (typically tax increases) OR at least to allow the issue to be voted on in the main election.

this is for the primary election, to determine who the candidate for each party will be in the general election that will come later

I have mixed feelings here. Part of me agrees that not voting is allowing the worst of us (extremists on either side) to make the choices. At the same time, both parties seem to continually give us the worst candidates possible regardless, and they do what they want after elected anyway. Ergo I understand the hopeless feeling many have.
At the very least, change takes caring about local politics. The vast majority of politicians work themselves up from the local and state levels. That’s where we need to play gatekeeper.

What I am about to say is NOT a political statement. 66.8% of eligible voters cast a ballot in 2020, normally the number barely tops 50%…that extra 15% has a massive impact – one vote at a time. If you want change, vote for it. Far too many of us sit at home and don’t…

I do like the mail-in-ballot option…but here we have to “re-confirm” we want it each year, filling out all the info they already have. Still…worth it.

How is voting surrender? I don’t think this time it’s surrender at all. When my chance comes, it will be an upraised middle finger against the daunting void. Maybe an effective gesture after all.

It is NOT voting that is surrender…And no, a gesture is not effective at all but your vote would be.

Martha, your question was…how is voting surrender? The quote was…NOT voting is not a protest, but a surrender. I thought perhaps you misread it or misunderstood it.
And if one is not optimistic.. about anything really…what is the alternative? Negativity, despair, hopelessness, depression, Ugh..no thanks!
