trying to learn to sleep in and sleep longer 

 always a lark, never an owl

 for many years i went to sleep early and woke up early

   want to see what my body will naturally do

accepting that i’ll always be a morning person

i’d like to compromise

be a ‘bit later in the morning’ person

last night/early this morning i was dreaming

about putting together a jigsaw puzzle

then i found a chunk of all white pieces still stuck together

so curious to see what would happen

and bam!

awake and it was early morning.

this may take a bit more practice.

  1. I was a ‘night owl’ for most of my life. Since I turned 65 I am in bed most nights by 11pm and awake at 7am. In the winter, I sometimes feel it makes the days drag, but at least I get a regular sleep.

  2. I’m a lark and I wouldn’t change it for a bit. I love that early morning hush and wait. I cannot find that same peace if I stay up later.
    Let your body take control :)

  3. Here’s what you need to do… ehem… tell your brain you’ll try this for three days. Try your best.
    If at the end of three days you succeed you’ve succeeded.
    If it doesn’t work repeat for another three days. See how it goes.

    (This coming from a night owl who has never succeeded. Ehem 🤭).

  4. (sorry to say that) More than 50 years ago I was up at 6am every day having a cup of tea with my Dad, and since then every job I’ve had required an early start. Now I’m well retired and still up at 6am for my first cup of tea of the day. It seems it doesn’t change, and I don’t think I would want it to 😊 The beauty is now nobody else is regulating my time, just my practised and largely carefree internal clock.

  5. I used to live on 3 hours of sleep a night, for the 30 years I cared for Carole … regaining a normal sleep pattern has taken me 12 years to achieve … changing established routines takes time Beth …

  6. I was an early riser (4:30-5am) for most of my life (for one reason or another). Been retired almost seven years now. I go to bed a LOT later (12-1am) now, and get up about 7am. Some days I can’t help myself and just get up at 4-5am. This usually lasts a couple of days and then I go back to “normal”. I nod off a lot more than I used to, but I also drink a lot less coffee and don’t move around as much. Most of my jobs involved frequent visits to assist end user’s with IT issues, so I was frequently up and down. When I retired, I used to try to get 7-8hrs of sleep, but could not. I can go to sleep (almost at will), but I can’t force myself to stay asleep. Now-a-days, I sleep when I’m tired and get up when I can’t sleep. Just listen to you body…

  7. Love the Kristen Mulrooney line, which reminds me of my son when he was the same age. When he was watching one of his favorite construction videos, he would suddenly cry out, “Words!” I rushed into the room to see what was wrong, only to find the credits running down the screen. 🤣

    I thought my sleeping habits might change after I retired, but they really haven’t. Stay up late and get up early is still in my DNA.

  8. HELP I JUST WOKE UP! Perfect. I go to bed late and get up early. Early bird as well, can’t seem to be able to change that. Good luck. Either way, you won’t have to be at work, so you’ll just have a long and lovely morning at the kitchen table. :)
