loved getting a sweet thank you note
from one of my former students
who is moving up to middle school this fall
on the back of her thank you she wrote
the top 5 things that I taught her
and here’s to number 5!
my personal favorite
it will come in especially handy
you never know when you will need this
it has certainly served me well
over the years
i’m pretty sure
that people who know me
really appreciate it.

That’s a touching note to receive, and I am sure you will treasure it. My mum’s only advice to me was “Be kind”. That has served me well throughout my life.
Best wishes, Pete.

yes, that works for everything, and I learned that lesson from the buddhists I visited and it stuck with me forever. your mom was a wise woman.

Beside my writing desk, I have jars of purple and green ‘glitter’, which are sprinkled in the envelopes of the cards and letters that I send to my relatives and friends

I do that too, I love that you do that. I sometimes have mixed responses )

I get the “please don’t do that again” every now and then, but mainly most of them appreciate the joyful humour of my message

Beth, this made me smile — especially your love for number 5. I can just picture the glitter in your grin!
Much love,

That is the beauty and wonder of teaching kids. They leave their hand prints and foot prints on our lives. Even glittery handprints. I had my first glimpse of the new group of sixth graders yesterday… they made me smile… admin days start Thursday and kids come back next Tuesday. It’s going to be an amazing year.

oh, you’re so right, clay, and isn’t it so exciting each year, a new group to spend time with, and they are probably thinking that about their new teacher, have a great year –

sometimes they are really funny. because we were a multi age class, we had the kids for 2 years. and now this has inspired another blog about what one little guy tried to teach me.

I bet they are! And that makes things more interesting to have them for 2 years. Can’t wait to read it!

I really liked her top 5, because she is someone who strolled with not following rules at times and stepping a little out of the box –

Audrey, it was such a joy to get this. On the front she wrote me a more traditional handwritten letter, thanking me for coming to her 5th grave moving up ceremony and filling me in on what her and her siblings have been doing over the summer. She was a child who was always a rile follower and mature for her age, very responsible and hard for her to act out of the box. It took time, but she learned to let down her guard over time, so this was especially poignant coming from her. This led me to think about a little got who I taught who was all about facts and what he tried to teach me and his lessons to me are so funny, but no less valid, and I’ll write about it tomorrow.

Glitter makes everything better. If I had a magic wand, I’d wave it over the Earth with glitter that when it fell on a person, they’d BE KIND to everyone from then on.

This is beautiful. Life is absolutely better with glitter. lol You’re such a great person.
My son’s 2nd grade teacher cried when school was over this past June and said how much she’d miss my son. I told her he likes to come back and pop his head in with old teachers, so she’ll be seeing him around.
It’s great when teachers can see previous students, as you know!
It does their hearts good. 😊
