In an interview with The Guardianin 2019, English stand-up comic Chris McCausland claimed the funniest English word is “hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia.” Not only is this a silly word to say, but it also has a humorously ironic meaning, as it refers to a fear of long words.

The real word “sesquipedalian” has only one “p,” so I’m wondering if the coiner of “hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia” added the extra “p” to get “quip” into the mix. Or perhaps the person didn’t know that “sesquipedalian” is spelled with only one “p.”

Kinda like sesquipedalianism…using words with many syllables.

I had to slowly annunciate each syllable and repeat until I could say the entire word. I’m not afraid of long words just ones that I can’t pronounce.

I’ll have to practice saying to not sound like a nincompoop if I were silly enough to try to use it!
