The real word “sesquipedalian” has only one “p,” so I’m wondering if the coiner of “hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia” added the extra “p” to get “quip” into the mix. Or perhaps the person didn’t know that “sesquipedalian” is spelled with only one “p.”

I had to slowly annunciate each syllable and repeat until I could say the entire word. I’m not afraid of long words just ones that I can’t pronounce.
