Interesting note:
“When the Viennese government compiled a Catalogue of Forbidden Books in 1765, so many Austrians used it as a reading guide that the Hapsburg censors were forced to include the Catalogue itself as a forbidden book.”

Such a powerful image to make the point. When I read a list of books being banned in some US states, I took it as a ‘badge of honour’ that I had read all of those mentioned.
Best wishes, Pete.

We have a “I Read Banned Books!” magnate on our refrigerator. A good sentiment to begin and end each day.

This is a brilliant quote. Those books they’re banning are filled with thoughts they’d prefer we not ponder…

Wonderful art installation. Banned books are no different than banned tv shows or banned public speakers. The creators/originators have the right to do so, and we have the right to see, hear, read what they produce. It’s called Freedom of Speech.

This banning books business frustrates me to no end as does “banning” comedians from TV or going after anyone who opposes you or your viewpoint. I believe in free speech, whether in a book, in a monologue, in print, etc.
And, yes, read. Every day. Knowledge is power.

hey Beth: just remembered when I wanted to read James Joyce’s Ulysses in my late teens — I was a very literary kid — the only place I could get a copy was from a grotty old porn shop deep in the port area —

Don’t those who try to ban books understand that all it does is have the opposite effect? We’re like a bunch of curious teenagers.
