Excellent quote and drawing. I wouldn’t have known that was Van Gogh. I think you left Lorca off the name of the writer, Federico Garcia Lorca, murdered by fascists.

corrected and very important to have his name right, I so appreciate you noticing this –

I searched for the Spanish original and got this reply from AI:
“The original Spanish version of the quote is: ‘Siempre estaré del lado de los que no tienen nada, y a quienes ni siquiera se les deja tener la nada que tienen en paz.’ This quote is attributed to Federico García Lorca and is commonly translated into English as, ‘I will always be on the side of those who have nothing, and who are not even allowed to enjoy the nothing they have in peace.'”
So apparently there’s doubt about whether it was really García Lorca who said that.

One of the highlights of my trip to Europe this past summer was visiting the van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I fell in love with his work. Great quote and a perfect depiction of someone who had it all, yet had nothing.

A van Gogh I’ve never seen before, and would never have guessed it was his. Painting and quotation so poignant as we approach Thanksgiving.

A wonderful quote from Lorca, and perfect to accompany the drawing. I am especially interested in The Spanish Civil War, and Lorca was executed by the Fascists at the start of that war.
Best wishes, Pete.

Reminds me of this … The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied…but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing.

I would never have know this was a Van Gogh. The expression on the man’s face really makes a statement.
