made a solstice crown
to teach the tiny ones
in my old school
the ancient stories
still hold true
the light, the dark
seasons, nature, circles
words, dance, music
children twirling with snow
earth tilts
sun goes down early
light is short
on solstice day
earth rests
next day awakens
the light returns
each day longer.

‘the shortest day and the longest night
a reminder that dark times give birth to astonishing light”

“I give thanks for night’s arrival.
Before you,
when every corner was ink black
and the world around
soundless
then was I most deeply troubled.
Night,
it’s not always black,
you know.

yes, always. I told the children about why people were afraid that the light was not going to return, why all people, no matter their culture or religion, celebrate winter holidays with light, and that the light will always come back.

I have always felt some kind of primeval connection with the shortest day of the year. In ancient times it must have seemed as if the world was ending.
Best wishes, Pete.

exactly right. all cultures and religions feared that the light/the sun was not going to return which is why all use lights in their winter holidays. I feel the connection as well, Pete

thank you, I loved making it! the lesson of the solstice is telling the children about why people were afraid that the light was not going to return, why we need the light (sun), why all people, no matter their culture or religion, celebrate winter holidays with light, and that the light will always come back.

It’s a wonderful lesson and gentle reassurance for young children to hear. 💕

The return of the light is my best Christmas present. And you’ve made it that much better with a cardinal, my favorite songbird.

Although the difference in light is not perceptible the day after the darkest day, I am always elated to know I am finally moving back to the light.

We had a friend in Portland who always held a solstice party in her backyard. Fortunately, it was always a summer solstice party. And yes, she was a total hippie. Fun times though.
