my friend recently met up with me

after having eye surgery

surprised

at all the things she could now see clearly

having adapted over time

never realizing how much she had been missing

even the coat she was wearing

she had returned a couple of weeks ago

insisting that ‘it is gray and not what I ordered!’

the company sent her a new one

she was a bit upset

when they sent her a gray one once again

but decided to not hassle with it

wore it to her surgery

put it on for the ride home

her eye quickly healed

wore her ‘gray’ coat to our meeting

discovering that it was actually ‘blue’

the color she had ordered twice

but could not see

imagine the things she’ll see

when her other eye is done.

‘every person takes the limits of their own field of vision

for the limits of the world.’

  1. My wife is always telling me that I see colours differently to everyone else. Perhaps I need some kind of surgery too? I’m glad to hear that your friend is happy with her improved eyesight. (The coat looks grey to me, by the way. 😊)
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • well, the other thing with colors, is that many people are just colorblind when it comes to some colors, and that may be what you are experiencing. she described seeing things in detail that she had never noticed before as well, not just color –

      • I love that. My local library in Vancouver had a book sale once a year to clear out damaged and old books. You brought in a box or a bag, paid $2.00 and filled it up with as many as would fit. If you arrived toward the end of the day, they cut the price to $1.00. I got tons of great books that way.

  2. Ah, I remember well the day that the color white returned to my vision! It IS amazing how we adapt to the worsening of our vision and amazing that a simple and painless procedure can correct it. And I can see the confusion of color in the coat!

    • oh, how exciting that must have been! yes, about the adapting to things over time. and with this coat, I can see it, but she also described seeing many things in detail now –

  3. I had my cataract surgery before I got to that point but realized color recognition was an issues when I had trouble sorting black socks from navy blue unless I was in very brightly lit surroundings.
