the scene of the crime
down by the river near my house
no one left any fingerprints
whodunnit?
official lineup of suspects down at the station
all trying to look quite innocent
who do you think it is?

Beavers have recently been reintroduced to waterways around Britain. I think it’s a wonderful idea.
Best wishes, Pete.

Looks like beaver gnaws to me. In Oregon, that’s our state animal.

good detective work, Jim and they get away with a lot because they are so cute

I think it’s a raccoon trying to frame a beaver. Those little devils are awfully sneaky!

you could very well be right, because they do wear a bandit’s mask and often get into trash trouble

The mask alone brands them as criminals!

Judging by the teeth marks, I’d say it was Bucky Beaver Ltd. The crew will be back to finish the job for sure.

Where I grew up in northern Sweden there were a lot of Beavers so this sight is very familiar to me.

perhaps the tree was attempting to show off its svelte new figure after tarting its Jan1st diet?

I think we need to have a beaver police lineup. “Turn to the left, and let me see those pearly whites.”

What a fun post! I was amazed how large the tree was in the photo. Beavers will tackle trees much larger than I’d realized.

Isn’t it also fascinating how beavers are featured heavily throughout history, and continue to change the world with each bite? There’s a lesson in humility there.

OMG what does that to a tree? I’ve never seen anything like it.

it is not uncommon here in the states, but this was quite a big tree. it’s the beavers who do this, they are always rearranging the landscape around the water, and often are credited with being environmentallists, they build natural dams, though not always where people want them –

One of the most famous and best loved trees in the UK was competely cut down by vandals not long ago. They’ve never been caught.

I unequivocally point to the suspect on the right, the beaver. We have had the same “crime” committed along the river bank in my city.
