A man ice fishing on Lake St. Clair got an unexpected shock when a vintage Big Boy restaurant statue floated beneath the ice directly below where he was fishing, according to authorities. The fisherman said he noticed a large shadow moving under the ice. “At first I thought I had a really big fish under me,” he said. “Then I realized it was a Big Boy.”

Officials believe the statue, which had been removed from a former restaurant location near the shoreline, entered the water earlier and remained buoyant enough to travel beneath the frozen surface. While the ice didn’t break and no injuries were reported, several residents who spotted the statue contacted the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The DNR says it is working to locate and safely remove the statue and is reminding the public to report large debris or hazards observed on frozen waterways, especially during periods of fluctuating winter temperatures.

“if you do not expect the unexpected, you will not find it.”

  1. That must have been quite a surprise for the fisherman! Imagine expecting a fish and seeing a Big Boy statue drifting under the ice instead. Nature and human leftovers sometimes create the strangest moments. The quote at the end fits perfectly, because life really does have a way of delivering the unexpected.

    • I’m guessing the dnr probably gave it to them after – this is from an old school popular restaurant chain here and people are always taking the statues and putting them places as pranks, this one someone ended up in the water and got frozen under

  2. Hand to God, if I saw an enormous head with sorta-creepy open eyes float up beneath me under the ice I would have a heart attack right there. Then my obit reads “killed by Big Boy” and I’ll never live that down. 🤣🤣🤣

  3. my initial reaction was SHOCK. a frozen dead body…. but then, of course, i don’t know the first thing about that chain and their statues. as a fisher, i surely would have had a heart attack and not thought of an extra big catch! ;)

  4. That’s hilarious. But this post brought back teenage memories of driving through the parking lots of side-by-side-by-side drive-in restaurants like Manor’s Big Boy in Canton, OH. A Big Boy burger, which was delicious, cost $.50, which was out of my price range. :-)
