i recently read something from a woman

 writing about her life online

 having a really tough day

 who got the best compliment she has ever received

from a reader who she didn’t know –

 ‘if we were in kindergarten together,

i would have hung my coat up on the hook next to yours.’

she said it brought her to tears,

and then, great joy.

wow, i loved this compliment too.

  2. That’s a great compliment. The best one I ever received was after delivering a baby for a single mother when I was an EMT in London. She had gone into labour, and the baby came quickly, on the floor of the kitchen with her back against the cooker. The mother asked my name, and I was wondering if she was going to name the baby after me. But she added, “I have already chosen the name Marley for my son, after Bob Marley, so won’t be calling him after you. But I will tell Marley that he was delivered into this world by the kindest man I ever met, and that man’s name was Pete.”

  16. For many years I made one-of-a-kind dolls, very realistic, mostly Native Americans. At a show in Santa Fe, an old Diné gentleman stopped at my booth and looked at each doll in turn. He must have been there for 10 minutes, never saying a word. Occasionally he would glance at me, who was not Native, and give me a half-scowl. Finally he had looked at each of the seven dolls I had brought to the show. He looked at me hard, and then said, “They’re OK.” Best compliment I’ve ever had.

  18. At a big party, I climbed onto a large trampoline where my gymnast nieces were showing off their skills. Of course, I was unable to even stand up. The people on the deck were watching and laughing and I heard my wife say, “The one thing I have always loved about Geoff is that he is not afraid of making a fool of himself.” I did not initially recognize the compliment but have come to embrace it.

  19. Now that is a heartfelt compliment. I would have been brought to tears, too.
    I was standing outside a restaurant, waiting for my friends when a guy passed me, stopped and came back, looked me in the eye and said: “You’re gorgeous!” and then kept on walking. I stood there, shocked into a big smile which remained plastered on my face until my girlfriends arrived.

  20. That’s a creatively original compliment and I love it. I do appreciate the unexpected kindnesses in life. Most memorable was a thank you from my son for something we as parents asked of him during a really challenging time. So if a thank you is a compliment, then that would be my favorite.

  21. When he was a teen, my grandson and I enjoyed playing action video games together. First person shooters, role-playing, etc. (And yes, I still play.) One day he turned to me, apologized for the language he was about to use, and said, “You’re a kickass grandma.” Just thinking about it makes me smile all over again.
