the pop of culture

Standard

Image

after yet another severe weather update, i decided to stay in for a while longer and indulge in a bit of pop culture – trashy mags courtesy of my daughter, a blitz of mad men season 6, and music from the 80s.

but, now i see that i should have gone out on my snowmobile for a trip downtown to see the movies on the big screen

walked downtown through the snow to meet my friend for brunch on this beautiful, snowy day. i knew it was time to go out, before i went a bit stir crazy like jack’s character in ‘the shining,’ after i posted this note to myself on the inside of my front door.  apparently, i was craving one last rasher of bacon, before being snowbound for the next day or so, with nary a slice in the house.

just got the call from a robot at school. this is the perfect storm. snow day on tap for tomorrow, and knowing it early.

reminds me of the time i had a snow day and my daughter and i went shopping to celebrate. i was wearing my new, full length, warm, warm winter coat. as we got out of the car, i stepped on to a patch of ice and somehow slid under the car, and into a massive puddle beneath where the ice had cracked. my daughter, upon stepping out of the car on her side, said she looked around and was stumped when she couldn’t figure out where i’d gone. once she figured it out and heard me calling out from below the car, instead of rescuing me, she decided to take a picture of it and quickly send it to her sisters and call them to tell them what was happening. good thing i had on my new, giant coat, which acted as an impromptu flotation device. she finally helped me out and as we walked into the store, a bit wet and muddy, and we laughed so hard and so long that i then wet myself, making it even a bit colder. life does not get any better.

Imagewith the first blizzard of 2014 still ongoing, and crazy outdoor games behind me, 12-18 inches of snow on the ground, and temps with a high of 2f, it is a day to sink down into the cottage, away from the outside world, the cold, the snow, the people, the noise, the light.

today is all about books and music and movies and cup of my chernoblyl blend coffee and time spent creating art and writing and napping and a warm bath, and soft pajamas and softer blankets – calm, warm, peaceful, quiet, cozy, comfort. and i will embrace every slow minute of it.

tire tracks in snow flying over the curb

went with one of my daughters to my favorite christmas tree lot, FLATSNOOTS, to buy my little tree. i love everything about these guys, they are always eccentric, friendly, quick, cheap, and helpful.

there was lots of new snow everywhere, and when i thought i was turning into their driveway, i was actually flying over a curb. we landed in their lot, in a parking spot, right next to their trailer. i rolled down my window, popped the trunk, and yelled out to duke, (one of the owners), ‘hey, can you toss whatever you have for $10 into my trunk?’ ‘nope. looks like you’re parked now, and that was quite an entrance. c’mon out back and we’ll see what we can find you.’

it was a typical flatsnoots shopping experience – they found me a little tree for $8, and told us to come into the trailer to warm up and pay, while they cut the bottom off of the tree. they quickly went to their mini bar, whipped out the cinnamon schnapps, and we toasted to the season, sang a song with them, and were on our way once again. i felt like we had been in a scene from ‘national lampoon’s christmas vacation.’ only better.
