a ticket
to watch
the detroit lions
play
a
pre-season
football game
the score
has no meaning
like watching
kids run around with a ball
gentle
careful
not to play too hard
no one wants to get hurt
and
a walk outside
after the game
leads to
a free front row seat
right on the curb
best seat in the city
on a warm and breezy
summer night
live music
fills the air
you listen
as our hometown boy
eminem
and his friend
rhianna
sing their hearts out
outside
right across the street
only 50 feet away
where
the detroit tigers
play baseball
fireworks go off
great music booms through the air
clear as a bell
bikes
that light up like magic
glide on by
and
fans of all kinds
music
and
football
and
those who just love detroit
all
together
running
and
dancing
and
talking
and
smiling
in the street
and
happy police
stand by
and
take it all in
a great feeling
fills the street
and overflows
as all paths cross
and
worlds collide
into
a perfect night
—
between two worlds life hovers like a star,
twixt night and morn, upon the horizon’s verge.

I lived in Southfield from age 8 to 18. My dad had a Ben Franklin store on 7 Mile Rd. and then one in Dearborn. Detroit, Vernor’s, Art Museum’s Rivera mural, Briggs Stadium, Motown, Fisher Theatre, oh gee, what else? We went to a Lions game a couple of years ago and it was so special to be downtown (and heartbreaking to drive Woodward Avenue, the strip of my youth :)). Loved this piece of yours. Really captures Detroit’s flavor and promise.

oh, that’s great, jan. what wonderful memories. i’m happy to report that there is a lot of positive activity going on in the city, including woodward avenue, where a light rail train is being built and many new things are coming to the city. it’s a time of positive change and hope has returned.

Hot town. Summer in the city.
I guess I understand the attraction to the wilderness. It’s pretty and quiet. You can breath.
It ain’t for me. It never has been and never will be.

I didn’t think you could get anything for $3.75. Sounds like a great deal. Was the music performance live? That would be very cool. I like people watching too. And so wonderful that people are hanging out and getting along just enjoying the time together.

sometimes the best things cost the least. and yes, it was a live concert across the street so the music carried out onto the street )

I’m a hockey fan myself, and my love of the St. Louis Blues puts a prejudice out there whenever the Redwings are being praised. But I know what sporting events are like, and you’ve captured the feel so well. $3.75 sounds like a night at the ballpark watching the San Antonio Missions play AAA baseball, or the Dallas Stars on teacher appreciation night when they’ve already been eliminated from the playoff hunt. Dallas Cowboys, though, are never cheap, and not usually worth even $3. The Lions could probably beat the crap out of them this year.

i understand all of this, especially your hockey passion. and i’m hopeful that the lions beat anyone, so we’ll take it )

This sounds like small town America in the 50s and not present day Detroit. It’s heart warming to know events such as this still happen.

I would have (yes, I have not been here for a while). I rode a night ride on Labor day weekend — 55 miles on gravel with several hundred bicycles, all with multiple headlights and bright red tail light. The bikes looked beautiful lit up in the dark, eerie when following a dim red light in the distance.
