  1. Very funny. In my work as an auditor of local government, we see a lot of this when we audit the courts. There are always a lot of overpayments because of rounding payment of tickets up and the overpayment checks never get cashed. Maybe as a society we need to do away with pennies.

  2. The scariest part of this whole ordeal is the comment that claims it is a trick to get your bank number, Beth. Oh, my, I hope that is not true. That is sinking, sinking, sinking to the bottom-feeding muck. You did wrong, make it right. Guilt in scamming?! I got a cold call from somebody who claimed to be fund-raising for a police tribute gala last night. I think that was a scam, too.

At face value, though, bothering folks for nine cents is beyond silly. I love your comment-suggestion of gathering up all the non-cashed cents in the world and giving THAT to charity. And not for a tribute gala, either. For your brother’s co-founded children’s cancer charity, I suggest.

    • oh, it’s very real mark. i got the check a couple of months ago and had a good laugh. it’s really credited to my account that i closed and overpaid by nine cents. now, the follow up arrives. it just keeps getting funnier – thanks for liking the suggestion )

  3. I’m going to be fogey. That company had to send you that .09. They would have had to send you a penny, if it was truly your money. By law, they aren’t allowed to keep it. If you had underpaid, hopefully they would have common “cents” to write it off.

If it was a scam, then scary. If it was a promotion, ridiculous.

  4. That’s hysterical and oh so typical, Beth. At this point, I’m a little fuzzy on the details. But I believe I was billed for 45-cents to close an account. It cost that much for the stamp to mail it back. Silly!

Enjoy your windfall, you plutocrat you. ;-)

  5. It could have been for a zero amount. :-) I’ve seen a bill for that years ago and the person had a terrible time getting through to them that you can’t pay a zero bill. :-(
