young dick cheney, it seems, did not look kindly upon coffee addictions. when he was deputy chief of staff in gerald ford’s white house, the future vice president sent a terse memo regarding donald rumsfeld’s coffee consumption. in september 1975, the then-chief of staff had spent more than $100 on coffee in a month—adjusted for inflation, about $450 in 2015 dollars. and it appears this wasn’t the first time.
“can you please tell me what’s going on?” a 34-year-old cheney wrote to staff secretary jim connor. rumsfeld’s nine-person staff (and their guests) had consumed a whopping 200 pots of coffee—about 50 pots per week. in a handwritten note, connor laid out the facts: “they are drinking too much coffee and have too many people drinking it!”

Bwahaha! If only they could look into the future and see what we pay for coffee now and how much we drink – they would faint.

I liked this post, Beth! I have a steady level of caffeine in my blood. About 3 to 4 cups a day. When I stop over to play with grandkids, my son or daughter both say (in different households) “Do you want a cup of coffee, Mom?” :) :) Yes!!!

Funny. It is true I need my coffee in the morning!! Oh well, Rumsfeld could have had a lot of coffee drinking guests and/or he and his staff really liked coffee a lot. :)

I admit I’m more a tea person, but, c’mon folks, it’s just coffee.
If you do get to the Lansing area on the west side of the city is the Horrock’s Farmers Market and garden store. There’s a complimentary coffee bar that offers around eight of their currently available flavors, too, plus enough sugar and flavoring agents and whipped cream and all that to make your own concoction. There’s also a Horrock’s in Battle Creek (I think it’s Battle Creek), but I’ve never been there so don’t know if there’s a complimentary coffee bar there. Anyway, it’s a great spot, worth the visit, not just for the coffee alone.

I think I get too much pleasure out of picturing young Cheney in a snit over the coffee bill!!!! The guy who had no problem with the trillions of dollars spent on an pointless war….

These days if you drink a large coffee or have soy milk in it (eww!) you could spend $4.50 on each coffee….drink 3 of those a day and there’s $450 a month on coffee – for one individual, that would be a worrying caffeine intake and a ridiculous amount to spend on coffees, but given that they were a “team” of people and probably hosting meetings & networking while drinking coffee, it doesn’t seem all that extravagent to me!

Beth, Lewis Black’s quote is an excellent one! You brought us another great post. What an interesting window into the lives of Cheney and Rumsfield, and Cheney’s poor use of this time.
