Of course, what is interesting is that many people did not choose to be parents and their offspring were the product of quiet another instinct, and that fact has led to much of the complexities in our modern social landscape !

I think he meant that not everyone who is physically capable of becoming a parent, may not be cut out for it, or want to be a parent, resulting in a less than nurturing atmosphere for both parent and child

Ah, that’s absolutely true.

Even if his words are true, they don’t indicate a person will actually be a good parent or possess the parental qualities that a child needs.

Being Dad is the best and most difficult job I’ve ever had. They’re all grown up now and are wonderful people, so I guess we did okay.

I chose NOT to have children for the reasons Mr. Rogers expresses so eloquently here. Many things entered into that decision, all of them personal. I knew at a very young age that I would rather die than have children. I don’t think anyone who feels that way should enter into parenthood. But it was interesting when I was in my 30s how many people asked me when I was going to have my family. What’s a family, anyway? Mine comprised several random neighborhood kids who desperately needed the company of a responsible adult and the 10k+ students I taught over 35 years in the classroom.

we each have our own personal definition of what family means to us. it always amazes me when people ask that question

I thought it was a way too personal question to ask anyone. There are so many possibilities for why a person might not have children, and some of those reasons are immeasurably sad.

As always, Mr. Rogers’ words leave me a bit breathless. This quote is so true, and sadly, many parents don’t realize the effect they have on their children. But on the other hand, as I watch my own ‘children’ raise their children, I see how absolutely observant and right Mr. Rogers was.
