LOL! I think of “Chicken on the Hill” when I think of Willie Stargell. And my grandma, because she loved baseball in the era of Willie and Roberto Clemente! Those were the prime Pirate days! ❤
Ah, September, usually a beautiful month on the north Oregon coast. and some of the tourists go home and we get a bit more room. Glad to have ’em (mostly), but it’s nice when they go home.
The golden-rod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.
The gentian’s bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun.
The sedges flaunt their harvest,
In every meadow nook;
And asters by the brook-side
Make asters in the brook.
From dewy lanes at morning
the grapes’ sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.
By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather,
And autumn’s best of cheer.
But none of all this beauty
Which floods the earth and air
Is unto me the secret
Which makes September fair.
‘T is a thing which I remember;
To name it thrills me yet:
One day of one September
I never can forget.
Gosh, that’s SO lovely. One needs to enlarge pic, it’s well worth it.

I love the baseball quote…”especially when we’re in it” refers to a pennant race, doesn’t it?

Yes, but could apply to all of life

Totally agree…in his case, they were still “in it”, and that is a motivation to try harder and stay focused…just as in life

One of my mom’s poems that she taught (and probably learned) in her elementary school classes. ❤

“It,” in Willie Stargell’s case, was the baseball playoffs and World Series…

it is one of my favorite months as well, perhaps because it includes both my anniversary and my birthday! Great Stargell quote!
