when i stopped by my favorite coney island restaurant to pick up a giant greek salad
(in detroit, coney dogs and greek food under one roof are a restaurant tradition)
something on their monday special sign stuck out
while the words ‘coney island’ were displayed on 3 signs all around it
and coney island is a part of the restaurant’s name
the special somehow became ‘cony‘ dog monday.
i know how hard it is to be your own editor
and i am easily amused
but it just struck me as really funny
that no one noticed
it’s the most popular item they sell.

Like I have always said, everyone can benefit from a good editor. Funny post, Beth. I have some friends who own a NYC style deli restaurant and I am looking forward to sharing this story with them, as I know they have fretted over the same kind of errors.

yes, I used to work in advertising, so we’d have numerous people read everything – it still happens

I’m amazed at what slips by editing. The plastic trash bins at my kids’ school had in writing molded into the lid “No Hot Ahses”.

Well yes… I kept my ahses right away from that bin. Not that I’m making any claims about the hotness there-of. Just a safety precaution.

We are very forgiving about spelling. We understand and laugh.
Just don’t do it when writing a term papr for Engish class! 5 pints off for each misspeled word. 😦 😦

That word was the first thing I saw when your post popped up, Beth. I thought WRONG SPELLING immediately but chalked it off to a regional thing until reading deeper that they do know about Coney Island!

isn’t that funny how it just stands out, I’m not a big fan of the grammar police, and I often spell things ‘wobbly’, but it was just so funny because it was literally surrounded by the word

Hi Beth – haha! Well you are right, it’s hard to be your own editor. I’m surprised no one seemed to notice. But it is amusing! Happy Friday 🙂

Not being able to spell a word correctly drives me nuts(er)! I cut everyone else some slack, but not myself. And I do catch myself judging what I’m reading if there’s a misspelling in it. It’s one of my old man cranky spots.

I was drawn to it and just found it so funny with all of the spellings of the word surrounding it

Well, that kind of makes it stand out at bit. LOL I’m sure they know about it, don’t you think? It will be come part of their history. And I know about wobbly spelling, believe me. Even I can’t believe how the words turn out after I write them. 🙂

A coworker misspelled “Groups” to “Gropus” and my mind created a whole alien race of creatures out of it. My favorites, actually. They’re similar to Wooly Mammoths with symbiotic lemur friends. I’m not sure when I’ll ever get around to writing that story.

I once sent a note home to my students’ parents. When one of them returned the note, she pointed out my error in the return letter. After that, I triple-checked everything I sent home. As a teacher, we’re held to a higher standard even though anyone can make a mistake.

Editing your own words is always difficult, because you know what you wanted to say in your head! I would have gone for the Greek salad anyway.

I’m reading this on Monday and wondering if maybe it was a Monday when this sign went up. I can see the person putting up letters ever so carefully and then standing back. Perhaps they did notice at that point, but not having a E handy maybe they thought, “will anyone notice? It still reads correctly, after all.” Maybe they even convinced the deli owners it was a way to make their dog even more unique. Sometimes we just have to embrace the wobble, don’t we? 😉
