my brother was born
when i was in my very early elementary years
i was so excited when he was born
he was the newest thing our family after all
i wanted to bring him in to share with my class
during show and tell
i couldn’t believe it when my mom
refused to let me take him on the bus and bring him in
telling me i had to bring a picture of him instead
i was furious
i couldn’t believe it
she was so mean
the nerve of her
i ended up showing his picture
told stories about how he cried and was loud and smelled but was cute
and years later
when i had my own children
i kind of got it.

Not every baby brother is so adorable that you want to share them with your class. Just ask my sister! Great post, Beth.

We didn’t have show and tell when I was at school. But when I was young, we could bring our favourite toy on a Friday. The girls often brought dolls, and I usually took a toy gun. Says a lot about gender stereotyping in the 1950s.
Best wishes, Pete.

Having been tasked to be a sort of ‘second mother’ to my younger (by 6 years) brother, I adored taking care of ‘my’ baby and I would have wanted to show him off too, if I’d have thought of it!

I kind of get it. But still….would have made for a great show and tell.

I think you should write a movie about sneaking him in on your bus despite your mom’s good advice, Beth.

My baby brother came when I was 5. I remember being “made” to take a nap when he was sleeping. 😦 King of the Castle was he.

Well, I had a baby sister and after a day or two I was asking my mother to give her back. Too bad she didn’t… 😊

This is awesome! We were always told by our teacher that show and tell was for special things. Your baby brother was certainly special to you.

I was 12 when my little sister was born … just as well there was no show & tell, at my age in school …

You conveyed it so well, how we only understand our parents once we are parents ourselves… I love your story, Beth, and I so understand the little Beth.
