not my actual grandson or car, but similar, especially if you didn’t have your glasses on

my eldest grandchild
got his
*Level 1 Learner’s Driver’s License
this week
how is this even possible?
—
* teens with a Level 1 License may only drive with
a licensed parent, guardian or designated licensed adult age 21 or older.
(soon to be a fully licensed independent driver within a year or so)

Definitely a big deal. I am sure we all remember when we got our learning permits. We were on the cusp of freedom.

Sounds great Beth! In Europe to acquire a driving permit you cannot learn on your own or with a parent or friend, you must attend a certified driving school (autoescuela) and then pass a theoretical test and a practical one. It takes anywhere from 8 months to a year and could cost as much as 2.000 euros. But they teach you everything from driving to mechanical knowledge and even CPR and other emergency techniques God forbid you might ever need on the road. It is thorough and hard to pass but we take driving very seriously over here.

yes, he’s taken the class all summer and road practice and tests. this is phase one, only with an adult over 21, then more classes, more practice and two more levels before he”s independent. I think that’s great that in Europe they also teach mechanicals

Are you going to slide over and let him drive your car, Peaches, or is that lovely rite of passage getting left to your daughter and son-in-law?

they are doing most of it for now, but I’ll be riding by his side before long.

When I was riding along side my learning daughter, as I recall, Beth, she said: I see you grabbing that Oh s—- handle, Dad!

It’s a first step license to drive with an adult until you have a certain numbers of practice hours and then take the next set of courses and practice

furthermore, i learned to drive in Canada…. where the streets were wide like motorways here and i passed with something like 8 lessons. on the eve of having passed my test, i ‘met’ my driving teacher when i drove my husband home in our VW bus and he screamed with delight to his new learner that i had only passed this morning. it was hilarious.
then, coming back to Switzerland, i didn’t have to re-do my permit. it was accepted (i drove already in canada and usa for more than one year) w/o a hitch whereas my sister who made her permit in scotland had to re-do her, ’cause they drive on the wrong side of the road…..

The perfect picture for this new journey in his life! My cousin in northern Missouri told me to stay off the roads in that area since his daughter obtained her license. I giggled! I’m sure you can’t imagine where the time has gone? Congratulations to him!

My granddaughter was in no hurry to get her license a year ago. Was somewhat intimidated by the idea — jumped a curb or something on her first outing. But yes, Colorado and Michigan sound a lot alike. (I flunked my first driving test in OK; went through a yellow light.)

Time rushes… and the kids are driving – now even your grandkids. It’s crazy!
We still have our theoretic and our 1-hour practical driver’s test over here and you need to pass a first-aid course. But the difference to when I went for my license passing a theory class is mandatory.

It’s definitely much more thorough than when I learned and that’s a good thing
