why does the dove sit and visit
day after day
her answer is
this rustic nest
built atop the rail
tucked way beneath the tomato plant
a safe and shaded home
for the baby doves
soon to be welcomed into the world.
—
“and there my little doves did sit
with feathers softly brown
and glittering eyes that showed their right
to general nature’s deep delight.”

“The birds they sang
At the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don’t dwell on what
Has passed away
Or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
Be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
Bought and sold
And bought again
The dove is never free.” … Leonard Cohen, from his song ‘Anthem’

We have a large Wood Pigeon nest in our front hedge. The two birds come and go from it all day, but we have yet to spot any babies.
Best wishes, Pete.

Wow. They built their nest so low! How lovely to be able to see it. There are a bunch of nests (I don’t doubt) in my cedar hedge. I’ve not disturbed any…

I once watched a family of doves grow on a beam on the patio. One chick was fine; one was mentally challenged. It was a good lesson in parenting.

What a lovely poem to complement the nest of soon-to-be baby doves.

Doesn’t seem like the best place for a nest, but who am I to question it?

Yes, we were quite surprised to find it there but saw the dove keep returning to the tomato plant

Oh that is a precious thing to have so close by Beth! We had four nests in our garden this year and I got nothing done as I spend so much time just watching the little feathered families grow..Two were on the ground which I found quite odd but they all made it. Of course they had quite a large guard most of the time. :))
Can you get a photo of one of the parents sitting on the eggs to show us?

this is not too close to me except for this past weekend, it is at my friends’ lakehouse. I’ll ask if one of them can grab a snap

We have all kinds of doves but I have never seen a nest. Heck I have never seen any nests and we have a lot of birds and a lot of trees. I guess they are all smart enough to tuck away their nest just like yours did Beth.

this is a first for me as well. it was at my friend’s house and he just kept noticing the doves coming and going and when we investigated, there was the nest!

My balcony plays host to a pigeon’s nest every year, but never one belonging to a dove. Coo!
