I didn't have my glasses on.... 
I wish I had seen a mermaid in the water. Perhaps I need to open my mind to the possibility, and look again. :)

I still hope to see a mermaid at the beach :) there are a few magical tales about mermaids one by an American short story writer still writing whose name escapes me :(

My 3-year-old grandkid loves mermaid of everything. One time in the library, she didn’t want to leave until she got a mermaid book to check out.

When I did a Google search for your quotation I got very few hits. Even a Google book search for “rainbows and mermaids” didn’t turn up many hits. From that I conclude that the thought is probably pretty recent.
