how i see it.

Standard

like me when driving at night, or writing, if you added in a pair of glasses and fingers crossed,

knowing i’ll get there somehow, not sure exactly when, and just trusting the process

‘writing is like driving a car at night.

you can see only as far as your headlights,

but you can make the whole trip that way.”

  1. There was the time I drove home from the Elton John Farewell concert, Beth, telling myself the whole time what a hard time I was having seeing the road, way worse than usual. I chalked it up to having waited hours on line for the shuttle bus to get us back to the way-away parking lot, and it being 2 a.m. and all. But then when I got into our driveway, I had to admit to my dear wife Karen that once I got into the driver’s seat I had found my prescription sunglasses on the console instead of my regular pair!

  2. This has long been one of my favorite quotations. The full quotation is “Writing is like driving at night in the fog…” which makes even more sense. It’s taken from “Writers at Work: The Paris Review Interviews” (2nd series).

  3. Hey, I went to see Anne Lamott (Bird by Bird) on January 29, 2000. The subhead, “Some Instructions on Writing and Life.” Anne Lamott said, “The secret of good writing: bad writing.” “Haaaa!” we laughed. She explained further, “Really, bad writing means the worst is over (blank paper). You need something there to work with to end up with ‘good writing.’”

And she also quoted the author E.L Doctorow: “Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”

  4. When your eyesight is what mine is, you wouldn‘t dare driving at night….. although I know the feeling only too good
I no longer drive in heavy rain or after dark. I wouldn‘t want to hurt somebody. But it‘s a real bother.
