the whole world gets bigger.

“oh how I love to read, she thought. ihe whole world gets bigger.”

— Louise Fitzhugh, Harriet The Spy (1964)

i always was interested in detectives and spies, and books were a way for me to feel a part of it.

without any real danger, but just enough suspense…

  1. I can remember my mother calling me to do something (probably the dishes) and I yelled back, “I’m about finished reading this chapter!” Then I’d read three more. Probably a Nancy Drew mystery. :)

  2. I always enjoyed the book ‘Emil and The Detectives’. When I was young, I read it several times. It was published in 1929. https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=31726276998&searchurl=sortby%3D17%26tn%3Demil%2Band%2Bthe%2Bdetectives&cm_sp=snippet-_-srp1-_-title1

I also liked the ‘Tintin’ comic books, as he travelled the world on his adventures, and even got to The Moon long before NASA. :)

    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. i don’t understand why people who are fortunate enough to know how to read don’t actually do it? Books have come to “my rescue” many times over the years. Harriet the Spy was a particular favorite of mine growing up thanks for the memory.
