hijinx on the first day of spring.

hijinx by maggie vandewalle

“Hijinx” is the very first hare painting by watercolor artist Maggie Vandewalle. This is a depiction of a spring day and the doings of English hares, having just just finished reading a book detailing their oddities. Hijinx is a wonderfully expressive piece, one that has inspired a whole range of hare paintings, but this being the first gives it a special place in her heart.

“i’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day.”

  1. This is so extraordinary in many ways. Yesterday, I wrote my only and last hare-card by this very artist to be sent to my favourite niece (psst, don‘t tell) because TODAY March 20 is the day her mother (my little sister) died 3 years ago…. I bought that card when I lived in the UK and just never could part with it! It made me smile every year when I took my Easter cards from their box and decided which ones to send out and which ones to keep….. It‘s btw, also the day we got legally married with our church wedding tomorrow March 21st. So, a day empowered and saddened with many emotions and always a rather difficult one to live through, but also a day to thank for because it released my darling sis from her illness and pains and gives us pause to celebrate our union of so many years!

    • wow, what an extraordinary connection, I saw this a while back and couldn’t wait for spring or easter to share it! something about it seemed so freeing and joyful. I’m so sorry about the loss of your sister and one more connection, I also lost a sister in the spring, many years ago, when we were in our 20s, in the spring, due to an accident. her children and now grandchildren live on, and for that I feel lucky.

    • Kiki -High jinks was a popular 18th-century drinking game in Scotland. The game involved throwing a die, and if the caster got a bad score, they had to choose between drinking more alcohol or performing an undignified task. The term “high jinks” is now commonly used to refer to any prank or frolic.
modern definition : boisterous or rambunctious carryings-on : carefree antics or horseplay.
