“Humanitarianism is about more than medical efficiency or technical competence. In our choice to be with those who suffer, compassion leads not simply to pity but to solidarity. Solidarity implies to demand a minimum respect for human life and to recognize the dignity and autonomy of others, and asserting the right of others to make choices about their own destiny. Humanitarianism is about the struggle to create the space to be fully human.”

“in a way, the same is true of the immigrants.
they have contributed in their way to the flowering of the community,
and their individual striving and suffering have remained unknown.
unemployment is not decreased by restricting immigration.
for unemployment depends on faulty distribution of work among those capable of work.
immigration increases consumption as much as it does demand on labor.
immigration strengthens not only the internal economy of a sparsely populated country,
but also its defensive power.”
-albert einstein, in a speech at the World’s Fair, New York, USA 1939

Some of us are immigrants, and all of us are descended from immigrants.
Too many do not believe in “human” rights.

Poignant indeed. Let’s hope such arduous travels become unnecessary in a better future.
Best wishes, Pete.

We are all immigrants. Immigrants are no less human.
And no one wants to move—leave their land, family, pets, old shoes and familiar things behind for unknown lands. No one! They do only when they cannot make ends meet.

It’s complicated. A world wide situation. Times change. Universal thoughts and conditions on rinse and repeat. Will humans ever really change? Will there be real tolerance, kindness, appreciation, and reciprocity? Waiting. Waiting.

Mixing and melding is the human experience. Over time, generations, geography, idealogy. That’s what we are.

Such an important post! I don’t understand the fear and hateful dialogue about immigrants. I suppose by talking in such terms, the speaker wants to de-humanize them. Against the sayings and believes of all religions. Be kind. Compassionate. Spread love. I applaud and am in awe of the immigrants for the journey they have taken to find a better life.

Thank you, Beth, for posting this. There’s too much negativity about immigrants and I am so weary of hearing it. I don’t understand the hatred toward immigrants and refugees, the unwillingness to show compassion and understanding. We are all, at our core, people.

I understand the concerns that people have toward undocumented workers, but it truly sickens me because I see how this has morphed for many into an anti-immigrant movement. (Even legal immigrants) It’s sickening how often this pattern continues to repeat itself throughout history with ethnic groups being targeted.
The friendship middle grade novel I’ve been working on for some time is all about this issue.
