one of my all-time fav directors, (though not fav humans), alfred hitchcock, was born on this day 125 years ago.
above is a comprehensive list of all of his 52, films, some obscure, ranked in order.
while i agree with most of rankings,
‘the shadow of a doubt,’
ranked #2 in this list, is my personal #1,
it utterly terrified me, and still does.
do you have a personal favorite?

I’m sure I’ve seen it, but I don’t remember Shadow of a Doubt. We re-watched Rear Windows a few years ago, and I had forgotten what an excellent movie it is. I love Notorious.

I will look for it. Not Hitchcock, but I love The Third Man, also with Joseph Cotton.

That is such a good movie!

As much as I class myself as a ‘devoted film fan’, I don’t adore Hitchcock as much as others do. However, I do love some of his films.
The 39 Steps.
Shadow Of A Doubt.
Strangers On A Train.
Rear Window.
Rebecca. (Wonderful adaptation of a great novel)
Frenzy. (Mostly for the London locations in this rather lurid film)
Best wishes, Pete.

oh, those were all great. I only saw ‘frenzy’ last year, and I liked it. makes sense for the Londoners to appreciate the locations.

this is a fabulous list, Beth; I’m a great Hitch fan but there were some of these I didn’t know: ‘Rebecca’. ‘Birds’, ‘Psycho’, ‘Strangers on a Train’ but the one I would watch again and again is one of the lighter ones, ‘The Trouble wth Harry’

oh, those were all great in my opinion. and harry was a riot!

I’m still terrified by “Birds,” Beth, and we have a lot of terrifying crows around these parts.

I totally get that, it terrified me too. crows are very bright and if I see them gathered somewhere, I imagine them plotting against me. )

He certainly was the master of suspense (and terror). I haven’t seen many of his movies, but then again I am not a movie person. “The Birds” terrifies me.

Shadow is on of my faves!!!! Dial.m for murder and rear window also for me. I like the one with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman….I think it’s suspicion?

My fave is Rear Window. That movie scared the heck out of me. Tension was handled masterfully.

So many good movies. I’d forgotten some titles until I scrolled through the list. “Rear Window,” “The Birds” and “North by Northwest” had all come to mind before I checked the list.

Psycho came out in my junior year of HS. The memory was still with us in college, and all the girls on my floor had an unwritten pact that if we were studying late and wanted to take a shower, we could wake up our roommate to come down and sit outside the shower just to make sure no one would come in.

I really get this, it took me along time to get over pulling the shower curtain

Not sure if you know, but I do a series called “Hitch Hiking”, where my wife and I take a long hike and then watch a Hitchcock film…here’s the one I did for “The Birds”: https://johnrieber.com/2023/10/29/hitch-hiking-is-for-the-birds-shocktober-2023-has-alfred-hitchcocks-bodega-bay-flying-horror/

I loved all the Top 9 on the list. I have not seen many of the films, including Juno and the Paycock. In the 1980’s, my wife and I rejected an invitation from my brother and his wife to see a matinee theatrical performance of Juno and the Paycock and opted instead to hang out at a motel swimming pool. Predictably they claimed it was the greatest play they ever saw and it has been a family joke ever since.

just the title alone sounds like a must see to me!) but…. you did have a motel pool…
some of the early ones are obscure and challenging to find, but I have found some of them, and of course it only makes me want to see them more.

Alfred Hitchcock was a peculiar man. I liked some of those old movies. They weren’t as scary as some of the newest ones, which I don’ want to see!

he didn’t seem to be a good person for a variety of reasons in real life. he was good in the cinematic area, though yes, many of his films were so scary

Hitchcock was the true writer of horror. His movies are far scarier than blood and gore. Psycho is #1 for me, and I still can’t look at a photo of Anthony Perkins.
