“and all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves…”

-virginia woolf, to the lighthouse

Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as ginkgo or gingko, and also known as the maidenhair tree, is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta. It is found in fossils dating back 270-million years. Native to China, the ginkgo tree is widely cultivated, and was cultivated early in human history. Ginkgo trees have beautiful green leaves that turn a luminous gold-yellow in fall. And on one day, after the hard frost, the ginkgo drops its leaves to the ground leaving a gorgeous carpet of color below.

  1. just 2 days ago, we passed a giant gingko (that is how we write it), it was so high that i nearly lost my head trying to see its top. one of my faves too. but i thought you had this one on display because of the kitten…. love these ephemeral paintings.

  2. The leaves are beautiful in the fall. I always look forward to it seeing them and the thought of being outside to rake them off the lawn and out of the beds. But secretly and deep down, I want to buy a chainsaw! But I never do.

  3. That is a stunning painting. And I love that a calico cat was chosen..it’s colors are a perfect complement to the colors of the leaves. I love Ginkgos too..I don’t know what it is about them that always makes me stop to admire them. Is it the shape of their beautiful leaves maybe? My dining room light fixture over our table has brass ginkgo leaves all around it and when the light is on they glow kind of gold…like the real ones. Chris
