when you get this message from your car
you have startle response
turn around very carefully
and see this
clearly my car doesn’t know me well enough yet.
i was picturing one of those scary old tales
we used to terrorize each other with
it would be either a guy with a hook
or a pumpkin head with no body.

look out! behind you!

Now I’m confused. Is that a real message from the car dashboard, or just a clever photoshop? 😕
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, Newer cars have this warning and it’s triggered when you have opened one of the back doors, then driven the car. It won’t warn you if you haven’t opened the back door, though. It came about as a few people had forgotten loved ones or animals and left the car to return to find a tragedy… it can get scarily hot inside a car in the summer or even a sunny afternoon.

Thanks for letting me know, Clay. I have a 2018 SUV with lots of electronic extras, but I have never seen a back seat warning message. 😊

It might be only mandated in the US

LOL! Well, the pinata wasn’t wearing a seat belt, so I guess you have a very safety conscious car, Beth!

I have 2018 GMC and it first annoyed me, then I figured it out. Now it reminds me to take my stuff in to school, lest I have come back out to get it!

Oh my goodness! Maybe it’s Halloween and scary movie season or election tension, but that dashboard message sent a shiver when I read it! Whoa! 😜

Exactly! Luckily, I was alone in my car at the time or my overreaction would’ve been really embarrassing)

HILARIOUS. Pinatas are to some what clowns are to others, and not in a good way!

So funny and true I’ve had so many piñatas in my car over the years because I love to use them for celebration and always have one in the trunk or somewhere, but I also I absolutely loathe and fear clowns

I’ve never seen a message like that in a car! And I’m relieved just a piñata is in the back seat :)

There used to be a story about a woman who returned to her car in a car park to find an old lady in the back seat who asked if she could take her home. The driver asked if she could kindly help to see her safely out of the parking space. The old lady got out of the car and obliged and the driver just simply drove away. When she got home she found an axe under the seat. I think it was a made up story but always good to tell around Halloween time.

I remember a few years ago when they’d broadcast the “warnings” to shoppers on the radio at work to check and make sure they didn’t leave their kid or their dog in the car. I wondered “Who does that?” I mean, actually forget they left a kid or dog in the car. When it’s done, I’m pretty sure when it happens it’s almost always intentional… then again, I don’t have either child nor dog so I don’t know.

I have a story about how I learned it. I’d read it before, but really learned it’s true. I think looking up is a viable survival skill.

There’s a climbing move to take you up a narrow chimney, your feet on one side and your back on the other. We were playing music and on a break I went up a narrow brick hallway and stayed up near the ceiling…probably about 15 feet up. It takes very little effort to stay up there comfortably. Maybe 20 people walked under me and not one of them saw me. Nobody looked up. Obviously, I’ve never forgotten it.
