learn to fly.

Standard

may this be the year you learn to fly.

Photographer Hannie Heere was photographing barn owls when she captured an unusual shot of a baby barn owl running across grass. Barn owlets start flapping their wings at seven weeks, making short flights around the nest at eight weeks.

‘we learn to fly not by being fearless, but by the daily practice of courage.’

-sam keen, american author, professor, and philosopher

  1. A really cute photo. Flying looks amazing, but running across grass can be fun, too. Your post made me smile not just for the photo, but because I recently made a video called “Possibilities of Flight” — I’ll post it sometime soon :)

  2. Reminiscent of my first child doing something unexpected like … I can’t remember what. lol But I remember the squealing of both parents and child.
The second child did the same something. but reaction was different. “What took her so long to do it?”

  3. There is a great line from The Mary Tyler Moore Show…Murray the Writer defends bumbling Anchorman Ted Baxter for bailing out on a confrontation with the new station manager at the last minute after vowing to storm his office: “hey,” Murray shrugged “when a donkey flies you don’t complain if he doesn’t stay up long.”

      • I think you were the one who encouraged me to keep at the crossword puzzles that it will get easier. You were right, and a few weeks ago, I completed my first Sunday New York Times puzzle. But from what I read, it’s the Friday and Saturday ones that are the real challenge. I’ll have to learn to manage my time between doing the crossword puzzles and my blogging stuff :)

        • right! and you’re on your way. yes, Friday is tough and Saturday is the hardest one, but I love that the Sunday is a bit bigger puzzle, with more clues to solve. We puzzlers all have our faves. keep on conquering the puzzles

  4. how very cute – i truly thought that this was a fake!
we are all learning to fly – first on our face, then during the good years by looking into the sky and the far away places and in later years (or getting blind like me) you bury thoughts of flying because you absolutely need to look on the ground or you fly again on your face ;)
HH gets annoyed with me because if i want to really look at something i have to come to a full stop – but i‘m often waving to ppl on ships, a bit further away, in the water….

  5. The quote reminded me of the book…The Fear of Flying, that I read in the early 70’s in Ann Arbor as a young student. And that little owlet is the cutest thing I’ve seen this year. lol. Chris
