this is amazing
i had no idea this was a thing
that’s cool that this young musician
knows the old music of the sea
carrying on the traditions
i’m hoping that
voyageurs, sailors, sea captains, pirates, oarsman, and explorers show up.
maybe a parrot.

beth, you didn‘t know what? the word shanty? i knew it from my time in UK but we also call this ‚seafarers‘ songs‘ – it wd however be interesting to know WHY it‘s called shanty…
i particularly like the ‚word po..‘ – that‘s something to go by ;)

here you go – ‘from Latin cantare via French chanter, the word shanty emerged in the mid-19th century in reference to an appreciably distinct genre of work song, developed especially on merchant vessels, that had come to prominence in the decades prior to the American Civil War.’

You reminded me of the Sea Shanty Singalong we had one evening on our ship during my recent trip to Norway…🎶blow the man down bullies, blow the man down 🎶

Sea shanties are great sing-along songs … my friend, Terry Fielding, had a No 1 Hit in 1972 with his song “The Whale”

I love that quote ‘just because i can’t sing, doesn’t mean i won’t sing.’ Everybody can sing. Singing is liberating….once you get past the “I can’t sing” part.

The Sea Shanty trend hit the UK a few years ago, when it became cool for young people to get into traditional music. It even spawned a major film about fishermen singing them, ‘Fishermen’s Friends.’ You might enjoy that. Best wishes, Pete.

I hope sailors, pirates and landlubbers of many ages gather to raise voices to everlasting songs of spirit, Beth. Once again, yay, libraries!

By the way, I just sang one of my very favorite songs in my head, Jimmy Buffet’s A Pirate Looks at Forty because I can. I consider it a modern sea shanty. RIP Jimmy!

It’s a wonderful thing! If you’ve not seen it, I highly recommend the movie “Fisherman’s Friends” with the wonderful James Purfoy. :)

I never heard of shanty being used this way, how clever! I fished on the ice in a shanty with my dad when I was young, does that count? Lol
