CASH – 3.19
DEBIT – 3.29
CASH & DEBIT
SAME PRICE.
are you sure?
is it me?
am i having trouble doing the math?
or
am I having trouble reading the words?
did someone quit in the middle of doing the sign?
where did it all break down?
please advise.

It was credit which was extra… no charge to use a debit card… I always was taught that costs of doing business should be included in the price…

Ignoring the sign error, I have to ask if $3.19 is the price for a gallon of petrol in the US. If so, that is incredibly cheap! That is only £2.48. The cheapest petrol I can currently buy locally is £6.75 a gallon, ( five litres) which is $8.73.
Best wishes, Pete.

Credit and debit are two different ways to pay with your card, Beth. So debit and cash and be the same price and credit and cash different prices.

One card set up with a dual account can accomplish both ways to send your money from the bank/credit union to the store, Pied Type. The pump or register will ask you debit or credit, and you tell it which way you prefer.

Oh, that’s convenient. Unfortunately, my two accounts were set up years ago, at different times and with different banks.

So right, Mark, so it actually is my error :-)

Not an error, really, but an opportunity to figure confusing things out, Beth. I scratch my head many times a day for sure.

I had to read it three or four times but yeah it makes sense. Businesses have to pay a fee to credit card companies. Cash and debits don’t cost them anything.

Ha ha somebody isn’t paying attention to their job. I remember a hot wing place nearby us that sold 12 wings for significantly more than double the prize of 6, so there was no point in ever buying 12. Everyone always bought 2 orders of 6 instead. I don’t think they ever figured it out.

A lot of places charge extra for using a credit card, but not for using a debit card. I don’t blame them, especially if they operate at a very narrow profit margin. I might do the same if I were a business owner.

It’s the new math since the Department of Education may be going away.
California is notorious for our outrageous fuel prices. I just paid $5.59 per gallon yesterday.

Pete, that’s awful. I have to apologize to all, though. A number of readers have pointed out. It is me who made the mistake. It did not say it did not say cash and credit were the same. It said cash and debit were the same, which is true.))

Oh yes, of course. That makes sense. I should’ve known that. Not all vendors adjust the price this way however. For example, a retailer will offer the same price on a product and manage their markups to include all costs, regardless of the form of payment.

Cash and Debit are the same price but Reg Cash and Reg Credit are different. Except on Tuesdays when Seniors get ten cents off for cash and on Thursdays when the Credit price is the same as the cash price if you pump at least 90 gallons. If you want a receipt or bag, they cost eight cents each unless you have a handicap parking pass and then they cost a quarter each.

so funny, and thanks to a few diplomatic readers it’s clear that it really IS ME! the credit/debit things being different beasts of course. and now, your explanation makes it explicitly clear.

Debit/Credit difference aside, it reminds me that the first time I ever saw gas signs that listed a different price for cash and credit was when I visited Detroit in 2012… many of the stations in Ohio and Michigan charged more for credit (Gas was over $4 a gallon then). I see it a bit around here now, but most stations here still charge the same price regardless of how you pay…

I I grew up here in Michigan where I still live and I do remember being surprised by the two different Price thing. I guess I’ve just gotten used to it now. It has to do with the credit card companies, charging businesses a fee to use their card.
