in a meeting with a group organizing a series of upcoming events
I was casually chatting with a friend sitting next to me
my hands were part of our conversation
as is my habit
(being half Italian after all)
the leader called on me
thinking I had raised my hand
to volunteer for something
(no idea what it was)
so i quickly blurted out:
” sorry, I was talking and tend to talk with my hands,
but I don’t want to actually volunteer for that, am I in trouble?”
which got a good laugh, as they are all quite good-spirited
(sudden flashback to my student days, not sure why I blurted that out?)
he took mercy on me and let me off the hook but it was a bit awkward.
I pictured myself accidentally volunteering
to be sent to the moon or enlisted in the army or?

like everyone else has read the instruction book.’

Ah, the danger of talking with your hands (I do the same thing) – can you imagine if this was an auction at Sotheby’s?

My dad was a regular soldier before I was born, and always told me, ‘Never volunteer’.
Best wishes, Pete.

I do volunteer, but like to choose when and what I’m volunteering for )

beth, you’re telling the story of my life! incidentally, HH is NOT speaking with his hands but he has extremely uncontrolled arm- and hands-movements, so i’m constantly also moving things out of his reach as well as trying not to throw up my hands….. we both should live in Italy!

Keep your hands by your side. Keep your thoughts deep inside. Others will think you are just tongue tied. Your foolishness to them will then be denied. Of course that’s up to you to decide.

One of the people in the comments beat me to it – good thing you weren’t at an auction!
There’s always a well-intentioned chatty one with hands in every crowd. Good thing you were in a good natured and humoured group. 😊

I talk with my hands, too, so I can totally relate to your experience. I always had to be hand conscious whenever I attended an auction lest I unintentionally bid on something.

Two great photos. Once had a Mexican guy ask me: “What’s with the hands thing?” I hadn’t been sure about his English. Turned out his was better than mine.

Whilst I have not, as yet, been called upon to as a question, there may definitely be some “additional explanations” by virtue of hand motions…

Fast talking auctioneers can be a problem. I keep our numbered bid card hidden until my wife actually wants to bid on something. But even when she is paying attention, danger lurks.

you never know where you’ll end up, what you’ll be doing, or what you’ll be taking home. I have to learn to sit on my hands, but it’s a slow learning curve for me in this area.
