a small sampling of some of the things that Pete the Cat
has taken into his lair and placed in his special box
sparkly pipe cleaners, a kitchen sponge, a sheep (now just a shaved body),
and a stuffed animal shaped like a peanut
but now
I have to ask:
‘hey, Pete, where’s my shoe?’
I woke up with one of my Birkenstocks
next to my bed
sometimes when I’m sitting down and wearing them
he takes one off of my foot
carries it around
so I have no idea where he found that one
wonder where the other one is
I looked everyhwere
finally
hours later
he casually walked into
the living room
carrying it and setting it down on the rug
no big deal
he must have another secret hiding place
where he keeps the rest of his stash
I wonder what else is missing?
‘my dear, i’m a cat. everything I see is mine.’

Below are a few funny comments from people on reddit about cats stealing things:
Does anyone else’s cat steal socks and carry them around the house? I found four
just yesterday and decided to try to sock shame her. I’m sure she was unfazed.
- Anyone else have a cat who carries around random objects (mine keeps stealing socks!) and cries out while they carry it?
A California couple’s pet cat stole more than 600 items from neighbors, including gloves, towels, bubble wrap, a San Francisco Giants baseball cap, and even a bikini. The kleptomaniac kitty’s record was 11 items in 24 hours.

The quote in red says it all. If you have a cat, nothing is yours any longer. 😸
Best wishes, Pete.

I didn’t realise cats are like that. I must have had a very honest cat, never came home with a decent pair of new slippers. :-)

This is very amusing. My cat doesn’t take stuff except my chair which I then can’t sit on.

I had no idea cats carried random items around and stashed them away. But then I’m only accustomed to the behavior of farm cats.

Pete is the first cat I’ve ever had that has done this, and why I was reading to see if others have done this. apparently is is a very real habit for some cats.

I had an old cat who loved to sleep on my Birks. I’d wear other sandals just to not bother his slumber.

Many years ago we had a cat who stole rubber gloves. I never caught her in the act, so I had no idea she was doing it; I thought I was misplacing them. But my rubber gloves kept mysteriously disappearing… until one day I came home and found Nelly lying on the living room floor, surrounded by her collection of rubber gloves — every one of which had several fingers bitten off.

I love the box collection. Funny to try to make sense of what he hides away. So its no wonder that the Birkenstock gets put somewhere else – it’s neither fuzzy nor sparkly. :)

Maybe he has a closet somewhere. It’s a waterproof one so it’s kind of rubbery and he can carry it in his mouth, which is his favorite way to take things.

Haha, that’s too funny. We have two cats. As long as they had to stay inside the house, the younger one played with a lot of things he found and even ate up my palm tree, but he never “stole” anything. Once they could go outside, they were not much interested in stuff inside the house anymore.

These two are purely inside cats and I’ve never had a cat that has done this, but I did look it up and found that there are many cats that do have this quirk

Animal stories are the best! Our old lab, Jake, used to swipe a loaf of bread off the counter and take it outside to his favorite tree to have a feast. “Honey, I thought you picked up bread yersterday.”🤣

Every morning I wake up excited to see what’s on the bedroom floor. I’m never disappointed. This morning I found gardening gloves (I left by the back door with my shoes), a long ribbon toy and a stuffed mouse. I have been putting socks on the floor since she loves to bring them upstairs. This was such a wonderful post. Pete The Cat knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s a pirate of sorts. So adorable. I love his little box with the toys.

I leave stuff on the floors and she never fails to bring it all the way upstairs to the bedroom. Sometimes I’ll find something in the hallway. I just put a pair of socks and one of her toys downstairs. The gardening gloves as well. She has a lot of fun and I love it. I never had a cat who did that before. I found a sock on the bed this morning. LOL She’s expanding her territory.

I have a clip in molar. Sometimes when I’m tired, I put it on the end table by my side of the bed.
My last 2 cats would steal it. I’d wake up and hear them playing hockey with it on the wood floor in the long hallway.
The last time was just after the last lock down. I never found the darn thing. I finally had it replaced – $900.00
