here we meet again
my former kindergarten student
now at the annual Ann Arbor art fair
having grown into a wonderful human
and innovative artist.

How awesome! It’s is always wonderful running into a former student. Give me a warm fuzzy and an occasional funny story. My chiropractor was a student at my school when I was in my third and fourth year. I had his little brother ten years after he was a student. Kids do grow up and become adults. It’s rewarding that we have a hand in their growth.

It must be wonderful to see that full ciircle, from small boy at school to a grown man and confident artist. And to know you played a part in that along the way.
Best wishes, Pete.

Really neat that you saw a former student — and that he continues to create art as an adult! 🌞

yes, and he was always very creative – I found some early pics of him. one was his ‘invention’ on the first day of school, and another was his building of an Andy Goldsworthy style piece of outdoor art using nature, and most of the class cried when he had to let it ‘go back to nature’ including him, and he remembered –

These have been some of my favorite moments in education, something I’ve written about several times. My analogy is it’s like reading the early part of a book or viewing the beginning of a movie and then stepping back in somewhere in the middle.

This is as good as it gets! I love stories of connecting with former students. You must be bursting with pride, Beth. Of course your Pre-K art and creativity made a lasting impression. Did you know he was going to be at the art fair, or were you surprised?

Yes absolutely, so good. I hope our class was a good beginning for him way back in the day, he was always a very creative boy. I’ve been following his art career going to a couple little shows that he’s had and his mom told me he was going to be in the fair. I was so excited for him.

Thank you for the ‘whole story’ Beth. Of course your class was a good beginning for him, and you were the one who opened the door. How wonderful that his mom kept in touch and you followed his career. You were one of the best teachers, Beth.

it’s just so interesting that it continues and so random in a way. I also saw him credited in a photo that a student in my school used as an example in a report she presented. such an odd coincidence. he lives in holland now. of all the photos, from any source in the world, from any place in the world, and she chose one of his to use. I don’t even know her, she was in an upper grade.
