yesterday i replied to my funny blogging friend from wisconsin
midwest mark at mark my words
https://wordpress.com/reader/feeds/132543474/posts/5777286675
who wrote about using funny fake names when making reservations
he asked if anyone else did this
which reminded me that i sometimes
use other names when ordering coffee
because for some reason
people often seem to get my name wrong
‘beth’ becomes: ben, seth, beck, bet, betty, etc.
am I not articulating well?
is it my fault that my parents
gave me such a complicated name?
with so many letters?
sometimes they ask me to spell it
B. E. T. H.
then they say
‘oh, just like it sounds.’
yes.
one time
I was with my teaching partner
whose name is judy
we each ordered a drink to go
with our own specifications
we each gave our names
when we got our drinks
they read:
‘judy 1’ and ‘judy 2.’
—
‘i’ve had my name mispronounced so many times, i’m not even sure i’m saying it correctly.’

Over here, Beth would be short for Elizabeth, or Bethany. Both are names that should not be mistaken or misheard in a coffee shop. 😊 ☕
Best wishes, Pete.

right, and actually my name of just ‘beth’ has a funny backstory in itself, but that is for another day )

Oh, Judy, Judy, Judy. Wait, there were just two of you. I know you are Beth, Beth.

I usually would do the same 🤭 especially when the cafe’s so busy that I know the baristas are having a hard time remembering more than one syllable name.

Funny post Judy 2! I have to try this now since I somehow have similar issues. Who knew Brian was a tough name! My new name: Mark. Of course, I’ll probably end up forgetting I gave a fake name. Ha ha!

I should just go with Ben

For coffe it is useful to change to a very common name, I do the same because nobody knows how to spell my name or pronounce it. :-) I just become Daisy. :-)

I should go with my nickname, peaches

People have often messed up my last name, but Beth is pretty simple, so it’s not clear why people mangle it.

I don’t get it. “Beth” is so obvious and easy. A Beth was one of my first loves, so maybe that’s it. :-)

Yes, you are attuned to it so you are the exception apparently

There is something complicated about our “four” names, “Beth” … for some weird reason, people have trouble getting my name, “Ivor” right

Longer names seem to be easier which seems counter intuitive

I was going to ask the same question as Vicki. See, I’d assume I was Judy 2 in that scenario. I don’t understand what’s so hard about Beth!

The only reason we knew was because the real judy ordered a root beer float
LikeLiked by 1 person
OK, yeah…that’s a dead giveaway. They probably just could have called out “root beer float” in that case!

Going back to my true crime roots though, why ignore my name and skip right to judy and then why am I #1 if she’s the first name they understood? #nameconspiracytheory

I think it’s hilarious the people can’t get Beth right. My name is Roberta which changes to Roberto, Rebecca, Renata, Robin, Roddy, Robert, Rosetta, and Rowena. That’s why I use Robbie which becomes Mr Cheadle 😂🤣

Maybe English was that person’s second language? Still, how does one mess up “Beth”?

Of course I had to go over to Mark’s post – too funny.
Seriously, why were your parents so mean? Four letters causing such grief.
Imagine being a Dale in a French province where the only time they heard that name was because of hockey players (Dales Hunter and Hawerchuk, come to mind). They look at me accusingly. But you’re a woman! Ummm… yeah? And then I’ll lilst off a bunch of gender neutral names. Maybe I’ll start using my mother’s name – Monique. Should cause me less grief!

I know what you mean, Bek! (haha) Having a name such as Geoffrey is very challenging here in Peru!

Judy #1? Now that makes it even funnier. Well, my middle initial is M, so it’s either BM or BS. I have no idea what my parents were thinking.

There’s a VERY popular ice cream and hamburger place in Buena Vista, Colorado that always has a crowd of people waiting for their order to be called. No inside seating, but a city park adjacent. They put a famous person’s name on your order and that’s the name they call with your order. When we were last there, we had lunch with Madonna, George Bush, and Martha Stewart. We were Dusty Springfield. Such fun!!

I say, the letter M whenever asked for a name… this causes a pause, but then a smile of gratitude for not having to figure out how to spell anything!

So funny! Were you Judy-1 or Judy-2? Miss O was asking why I just say W-Y-N when giving my name. I told her that it wasn’t necessary to complicate things with the silent letters. :)

I told Mark that when I’m in a playful mood, sometimes I’ll give myself a non-English name like Raoul or Humberto when making a dinner reservation over the phone. You can imagine the looks from the host when they see me in person.
