early evening in the washington boulevard historic district of detroit
i’m reminded of the whimsy of willie wonka’s chocolate factory

‘genius is nothing more nor less than childhood recovered at will.’
-charles baudelaire
*Charles Baudelaire was a 19th-century poet French poet, critic and essayist who explored themes of modernity, urban life, and decadent beauty. He is considered a father of modern poetry and an influential figure in Symbolism, a movement he helped inspire through his exploration of subjective experience, mortality, and “spleen”—a state of melancholy and ennui.
Baudelaire was fascinated by the details of the bustling, modern city and its inhabitants, capturing both the beauty and the decay he saw in everyday life.

A great quote from a truly great poet, Beth
“Like those great sphinxes lounging through eternity in noble attitudes upon the desert sand, they gaze incuriously at nothing, calm and wise.” ~ Charles Baudelaire

Happiness…so much happiness! I think it’s the blue hues throughout…lively, lovely. And yes…we need…I need more whimsy in my life. Thanks for this morning’s dose, Beth! xo! ❤️😊❤️

This is lovely. It brightens up the side of a building and the surrounding neighbourhood but also works within the aesthetic rather than be an urban eyesore.

What fab inner city art! And, what’s so wonderful for me is you’ve reminded me of one of my favourite poems by Apollinaire who was influenced by Beaudelaire and his representation of water to reflect the passing of time, “Le Pont Mirabeau” and its remarkable refrain, “Under the Mirabeau bridge / flows the Seine /
And our loves / Must I remember them / Joy always followed pain”

Having just watched “8 Mile” a few days ago, I’d say the Detroit depicted in that movie was light on Baudelaire, heavy on decay. But hopefully it’s continuing to improve.
