up north visiting empire/glen lake, michigan
reading one of the little local papers
the leelenau enterprise
when what do I happily stumble upon?
two letters to the editor.
the first,
a thank you to the 25 snow plow drivers and support staff who drove 15,000+ road miles over 5 days to clear snow during the recent insane blizzard – yes, superhuman heroes
and next,
a casual observation about a recent local big foot sighting, simply advising the other locals to use caution, no big worries.
I really have a great love of local papers
these are just two reasons why.
—
“to look at the paper is to raise a seashell to one’s ear
and to be overwhelmed by the roar of humanity.”
-alain de botton

There is no better or more satisfying way than with a newspaper in front of you. And Bigfoot! In Michigan! I thought they lived in California and the Pacific Northwest? Nice post Beth.

I so agree, and yes, of course! Bigfoot loves michigan –

yes, I love local papers too: the quirk of them, the finicky attention to little details ; the demise of our local paper in print a few years ago was a loss —-

Having worked for newspapers in the distant past, it always pleases me to see some little ones still alive and kicking. So many have disappeared in my lifetime.

Sadly, they have and how lucky that you were a part of them once I find great joy in them and they’re so honest and this is the place where you see humanity celebrated in a truly from the heart level.

I love small town newspapers also. There are often gems, like these you found, published therein. I also love them because they reflect the community. And, finally, I love community newspapers because I’ve worked at several as a reporter and photographer. Thank you for supporting journalism in our small towns.

I so agree Audrey and I feel that you are very lucky to have had that experience. I continue to support them and always will and hope that people will continue to support them forever. Thank you for being a part of this very important part of the human record.

I would much rather read one of these than a national paper Beth 🤗

Oh, my, superheroes indeed 😄Since our country is so small, our newspaper is already local too. Filled with stuff you did not know you needed to know… lol.

Great to see a local paper thriving. Our one is still going, reporting on things like a new hut for the Boy Scouts, or the theft of a ride-on lawnmower from an outside storage shed. It makes me feel as if we are still living in the late 1950s, and the terrors of the world outside are an illusion.
Best wishes, Pete.

I really like local reporting and outlets when it comes to local topics. They have the detail and flavor of a place. The two articles in your post are totally charming.

You are the local paper in today’s world where local isn’t all in the same physical space.

Funny I was thinking about my folks, who lived in Cedar for decades, and then I see this post. My stepsister still lives and works in Empire! :)
