as a lover of the printed page
i still happily await the arrival
of each sunday’s newspaper
on my doorstep
in spite of
sadly seeing this
far too often.
“every day or two, I strolled to the village to hear some of the gossip which is incessantly going on there,
circulating either from mouth to mouth, or from newspaper to newspaper,
and which, taken in homeopathic doses,
was really as refreshing in its way as the rustle of leaves and the peeping of frogs.”

my doormat without a sunday paper on it.
my very kind paper man
told me to just text him if i was ever missing a paper
he would drive over to deliver it
i love the sunday paper and especially the crossword
love throwing open my door on a sunday morning
the paper patiently waiting for me on my door mat
love opening it
with a fresh cup of steaming coffee
and diving in
the day came
when it wasn’t there
i sent a gentle text to my paper man
saying there was no sunday paper waiting for me today
he very quickly responded to say –
that is because today is saturday.
ah, i thought.

Sunday is the day of the week between Saturday and Monday.
Sunday is a day of rest in most Western countries, and a part of the weekend.
“time flows in strange ways on sundays.”
when reading this article about literacy
i was saddened by it
yet i was struck by an typo
not meant to be ironic
that perhaps unknowingly proved the point.
“literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

“ann arbor news reporter stan bradshaw
leaves building front door for assignment, september 1948″.
this old news image reflects the one we often had of intrepid reporters, hot on an assignment, giving us the latest news of pinnacle events in the life of ann arbor. there was a certain quality and reliability to the news and its staff, bringing us the best stories and photographs available. the photos still resonate with the innocence and spontaneity of life and those living it here.

i’m at war
newspaper delivery service
who delivers it
that i never see.
even when he is bad
throws it in a puddle on my driveway
on the hell strip near the street
somewhere in my garden
i appreciate him
and his delivery service.
i never complain
always tip him
no matter what.
i love the newspaper
love to hold it in my hands
take my time reading it.
cut things out of it
it’s now only delivered 3 days a week
for some reason
it comes sporadically.
for 3 weeks it was missing on thursdays
then i got 2 copies on the next thursday
but it was missing on that friday
then on a sunday
the three delivery days are:
thursday, friday, sunday.
i always call
looking for it
they always credit me
but what i really want
is to just have it delivered
for those 3 days.
they are always kind
they never can figure out
the reason for the inconsistency.
it’s the same paper guy.
my house has never moved.
it’s the same 3 day schedule it’s been for 2 years.
the sun still
comes up in the morning
sets in the evening.
is there something i’m missing?
i’d just like to be treated like a regular customer.
