loved this film since it came out in 1985
an underrated stand alone fantasy film
grew a cult following
a bit of everything of the era
young matthew broderick and michelle pfeiffer
in some of their first roles
rutger hauer in one of his last roles
a hawk, a wolf, a friesian horse
alan parsons project, synth music, and gregorian chants
create the soundtrack
everything is over the top
costuming, set designs and dialogue
medieval french fantasy shot in italy
sweeping vistas, stunning cathedrals
romance, humor, a curse, a villain, drama, battles, love, courage
when mixed all together
unfolding on the screen
you have a perfect 80’s film recipe
i’ve seen it a number times over the years
(my daughters have too, by default)
every so often i watch it again
still love it each time.

I watched it because of the excellent casting of some of my favourite actors. I don’t usually watch fantasy films, but I was surprised how good it was. So I completely agree with you on this film choice, Beth.
Best wishes, Pete.

I remember that movie. I only saw it once but I loved it. Michelle Pfeiffer is currently in Margo’s got Money Problems on Apple TV with Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman. It’s a fun show. Pfieffer plays a character so off brand it is refreshing.

It is a good movie, i loved the Friesian horse also. My neighbor has a Morgan mare named Ladyhawke, she’s old but very sweet.

I need a scale upon which to judge this film, as I have never seen it. Would you say it’s more or less cheesy than “Clash of the Titans”?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Not to intrude, but here’s a link. I’m kind of jaded, but I like this one. Cheesy depends on your definition. The special effects weren’t cheesy. However, it’s romantic fantasy, leaning to the romance. Cheers.

It is up there – Matthew B’s role is kind of like low level princess bride humor, and the romance/drama/ magic is like a way over the top and great -and you have the synth music and chants, it’s a winning mix in my book

Thanks for this post, Beth. I loved that movie too — it’s well done all around. I had a crush on Rutger Hauer since Blade Runner (a few years before this), but regardless of crush or looks, he was a brilliant actor. There was a low-budget movie in the mid 80s called The Hitcher. A really bad movie — but he took that shoddy part and turned in a fantastic performance, despite everything else in the movie.
Anyway, thanks for getting my mind off bad things. Big hugs.

The 80s fantasy genre is something else. This is a great film. Willow is another one for me too.

That is a beautiful and lyrical description of this film. Unfortunately, I have not seen it and I think it might be the first time I’ve heard of it. It came out in 1985 and back then I was a young man in Sweden (in the military) and I had not been to the US yet and I had not seen many American movies.

You are right is defione of those underrated movie as much as Rutfer Hsuer has always been an underrated actor.
Strange like the movie then is rarely mentioned among the movies done by the more universally famous stars who were in the candy like Pfiffer or Brodetick. A pity really.
