As the United States marks its 250th anniversary today,

remember Erma Bombeck’s timeless quote about the way the nation has celebrated Independence Day-

including “family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and the flies die from happiness.”

“You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.”

  21. The family gatherings – including with chosen family – are always what makes these holidays great. And the overeating is part of the charm of the tradition!

  22. awh, i love this SO much better than all the over-pushed celebration nonsense – and anyway, not much to be celebrated this year me thinks! i also love these nostalgic kids books; i’m still a kid inside my ageing body!
