tangled cord.

Standard

not us, but what we might look like if we were minions,

as we share a similar level of excitement about being at the movies

how fun to meet my friend

at 10am at the theater

like skipping school

on a sunday morning

attending the church of film

i bought a coffee

snuck in my breakfast bar

as we walked in

i saw an older couple

and reacted by saying,

“wow, there are other people here!”

their response was to just stare ahead

we continued on to our seats

5 or 6 more people arrived

while we waited for the movie to start

my friend and i caught up

we started bonding with the others near us

talking about how good we all hoped movie would be

how it was funny we were all at such an early movie

talking about the trailers

someone noticed

there was no audio during the movie trailers

thinking it would be taken care of

by the time the film started

we were all in our comfortable recliners

with our snacks, chatting, and feeling a bit decadent

when we realized the audio may never happen

the manager walked in

telling us there was an issue with the sound

something technical…

(try unplugging and plugging it in?))

no one to fix it at 10am on a sunday morning

how quickly the air was let out of our giddy balloon

we lined up still chatting as she refunded us

some walked out with a sunday breakfast of popcorn and drinks

 plans suddenly turned

but it was fun while it lasted

and we’ll be back.

plans.

Standard

the recipe said it was easy

only 4 ingredients

no cooking

only

melting

spreading

drizzling

chilling

but

they did not say

not to wear a white sweater with bell sleeves when melting chocolate

don’t forget that you have to individually unwrap each caramel

while chocolate is still warm and not solidifying

that the peanut butter chips won’t actually drizzle

that the caramel will come out in blobs

that the chocolate on the bottom won’t easily come off of the foil

that the slab will not actually break in the right way

that the 4 ingredients will re-solidify in the disposal

that the whole thing will not resemble the picture

that it will still taste good if people are daring enough to try it

that this will be a one-time recipe for me.

Standard

it seemed like such a good idea at the time.

brilliant, in fact.

we were teenagers, with time to kill, and we had a half day of school.

Image

i invited my friends over for an afternoon of watching our favorite soap opera, all my children.

all sorts of crazy fun was going on with luke and laura and the people of pine valley

and we were going to watch it in style.

my friends were happy to come along for the ride.

Image

this is how i imagined us watching the show that afternoon….

Image

reality was a bit different however.

Image

we took a fan outside,

Image

wheeled the old tv out on a cart,

Image

plugged everything in with a giant extension cord,

Image

got the lounge chairs and drinks in place on the patio,

Image

put on the sunglass and the sunscreen,

Image

whipped up a huge buffet of all of the mini frozen pizzas in the house,

Image

and then.

my mom came home.

and shut down the whole operation.

something about feeding the whole neighborhood

and moving the entire living room to the patio.

and trashing the kitchen.

and as we cleaned up and put everything back,

we made plans to do it the next week at my friend’s house.

it was kind of like a teenage version of ‘cat in the hat’.

except my mom came home in the middle of it.
