in the frequently stunning public arena known as politics, the following scenario recently played out at a local city council meeting :
3 members of the city council abstained from voting on a measure that would have prevented them from abstaining on future votes. 1 city council member had proposed a resolution that would have required each member to only vote yes or no on each issue. the mayor and 2 council members abstained. the resolution failed. i have chosen to abstain from stating my opinion on this matter.

Who gave you the right to disallow the right to abstain from abstaining? That should have been put to the vote and I, for one, would have abstained… I think!

Right! That sounds like a call for strike action. All out brothers and sisters! Who’s our union rep? …
Oh, … er … It appears to be you.
In that case, er… would you mind awfully if the proletariate engage in showing a united and defiant strike action to protest at the iron-fisted, tyrannical rule of the despot blog writer, she being your good self … or bad self as the case may be?
It would be awfully nice of you.
Many thanks.

It’s a good thing I never had to cover city council meetings for some newspaper. I’m suddenly very confused.

To be fair to the abstainers, any resolution removing “abstain” as a voting choice is ridiculous to begin with. Sometimes abstaining is necessary — often when an elected official does not feel that they are able — for whatever reason — to vote for the resolution that is on the agenda — often this occurs when the voter has a conflict of interest or does not feel properly informed (sometimes office holders miss work sessions/meetings for valid reasons).

Oh, yes… it’s funny. Definitely some “behind-the-scenes” machinations going on there, too. LOL!

I don’t think councillors should have the right to abstain but I wouldn’t vote on it because I don’t want to!
(utter confusion!)

Where else can one abstain and keep employment? You can abstain from answering that.
This is so funny my dad and I have had a good laugh and abstained a lot since I read this… lol

Ugh. Further evidence of a broken system… hopefully the people will abstain from voting for these people to retain their posts the next time their terms are up.

Off with their heads! Sorry – I just read a post on Lewis Carroll and I’m really feeling the Red Queen right now. It seems appropriate in this case and for all the politicians playing politics with our lives. Nice post.
