when he was just 6, one of my kindergarteners handed me this story that he had written using his invented spelling. . as he read it aloud to me, i transcribed it into more traditional adult spelling. i found it to be heartfelt and very funny and i’ve saved it among my treasured writings . recently, i gave him a copy of his story, as he heads off to college, a little older and perhaps little more worldly and wiser.

It’s true. Annoying girls will always go for the french kiss. It’s their wheelhouse.

Great post and very timely for me today as my son got his final school results. He and my daughter are very dyslexic and we have so many of these amazing stories and notes all misspelt. I love them even though they do mean school life is very difficult.
The topic for one so young was funny though.

my heart feels you today tric, i know school is more of a struggle for some, more than others, and i love them all, as they find their unique place in the world.

Thanks. My son got what he wanted so will qualify for his place in Uni. We are thrilled for him. Sad post coming up when he flies the coop. Teachers are amazing though especially those who go the extra mile. They transformed his life and really helped and encouraged him to achieve so much.
I am glad now to have kept so many of the little notes like the one you have posted here today. It made me smile (with a small tear in my eye) to read it.

i’m so happy for both of you, for i know it’s truly a journey for the parent as well as the chid. many thanks for recognizing the role that teachers can make in a child’s (and parent’s life), it’s truly my main hope in teaching, that i can somehow make a positive difference in someone’s life, no matter how small or large )

Love this post. With or without my glasses, I still remember my first kiss. However, the greatest kiss of all time for me was when I experienced that first kiss with my Tom. He’s brightened my soul in so many difficult places. I hang on to those precious memories and tell him some of those stories of our past as he hangs on trying to remember. Thank you for allowing me to remember once again.

When I read the translation I guffawed! Imagine a kindergartner understanding what a french kiss is, than imagine him resisting such an attempt. A dozen or so years later he’s probably the one being called annoying for trying the same manoeuver.

happy you were joyfully surprised by the note, and yes, you are probably right about his current status)

How wonderful that you kept the note and were able to give it to him as he goes off to college.
I do wonder what happened to Annie, though.

Great post! It can be extremely annoying to get French-kissed at the age of 6. I am impressed that your son expressed his feelings of resistance, and didn’t go with the flow. I am also sure his strong determination must have stopped “Annoying Annie” from attempting deja vu of her fancy French-kissing. :-)
My congratulations to you and your son for successfully managing and overcoming the challenges. It’s surely not an easy task to deal with dyslexia.
Thanks for sharing the story, the note by your 6-year old son, and most importantly, your translation after deciphering that note. Best Regards.

thank you deodatta, though the note was written by a former student, not a son, by like family to me –

Thanks for clarifying, and my sincere apology for the misunderstanding on my part. So sorry! Regardless, it is a splendid achievement by the former student and yourself as the teacher. You are indeed making a big difference and adding value to our society as a committed teacher. Thank you.

oh no worries at all and no apology needed, i think you may have just added in a bit of one of what the responders said with regard to this post and how it reminded her of her own son. thank you for the compliments as well – best, beth

i highly doubt that he did either. it must have been some sort of natural survival instinct to believe it was scary and needed to be avoided at all costs )

My boys, 9 and 11, still call that “kissy” stuff “yuck.” I remember a girl trying to kiss the older when he was 4 and him yelling and running away. Too funny!
